Our Trip to Vietnam

A few weeks ago we came back from our trip to Vietnam. We went to visit Tanje's family in Ho Chi Min (Saigon). The city is a good example of a developoing mega city, with over 8 million people and 2.5 million motorcycles, the traffic is one of the higlights of the city. We did some shopping, relaxing by the pool and eat excellent food. We also spent some days by the beach at Muine, in Pandanus resort. We enjoyed a huge beach only for ourselves. The place was great, good windsurfing, amazing landscape, dunes and a genuine fishing village nearby. More pictures in my Flickr (Click the icon on the sidebar)

Hace unas semanas volvimos de nuestro viaje a Vietnam donde pasamos unos dias con la familia de Tanje en Ho Chi Min, (Saigon) La ciudad es un buen ejemplo de las megaciudades de Asia, con 8 millones de personas y 2.5 millones de motos, el trafico en una de las prinicpales atraciones. Fuimos de compras, comimos bien y nos relajamos en la piscina. Tambien pasamos unos dias en la playa en Muine, en un resort llamado Pandanus. Alli pudimos disfrutar de una playa para nosotros solos y las dunas, el windsurf, y la ladea de pescadores local. On Sunday morning they announced the 5 finalists and to our surprise we were among the chosen. Back to the room to prepare the presentation to be delivered by 11.30 and ready to present at 13.00. The pity was that we did not have the chance to see the presentations of the previous teams. Our presentation went pretty well, even better than planned. Niina was great in the opening and the rest of the team followed the style and pace that she used. The jury went for deliberation for 30 minutes and after that came back with the result. The first prize for INSEAD, who according to everybody had the best content and financial support. But the surprise came when the jury mention our name and decided to give us two prizes, the second prize and the special prize for the innovative approach and outstanding presentation. We had just left behind the most expensive and well know business schools and MBAs.

El domingo por la mañana anunciaron los 5 finalistas y ante nuestra sorpresa fuimos elegidos. Nos volvimos a encerrar para terminar la presentación que debíamos entregar antes de las 11.30 y presentar ante el jurado a las 13.00. La pena fue que nos perdimos la presentación de los equipos que presentaban delante de nosotros. Nuestra presentación fue muy bien, incluso mejor de lo que habíamos planificado. Niina estuvo genial en la introducción y el resto del equipo siguió el ritmo y tono que ella había marcado. El jurado se marcho para deliberar durante media hora. El primer premio fue para INSEAD, quien de acuerdo con todo el mundo fue superior en el análisis financiero. Pero la sorpresa llego cuando el jurado menciono nuestro nombre y decidió otorgarnos dos premios. El segundo premio y el premio especial del jurado por nuestra estrategia innovadora y nuestra excelente presentación. Acabábamos de dejar detrás a las mas prestigiosas escuelas de negocios de Europa.

We went on a cruise afterwards and back for a dinner at Pembroke’s college. The place made you feel like fellow of Harry Potter. Later we went to Freud’s a trendy place located in a neoclassic chapel.

Al acabar la jornada el sábado nos llevaron en un crucero por uno de los canales de Oxford. Después fuimos a cenar al Pembroke’s collage. El sitio te hacia sentir como si estuvieras dentro de una película de Harry Potter. Por la noche acabamos en Freud un garito de moda situado en una capilla neoclásica.

On Saturday we worked in writing the report on the case that we got by 8.00am and that we had to deliver by 5.00pm. Our room by the end of the day was covered by strategic plans and storyboards.

El sábado trabajamos escribiendo el documento del caso que nos entregaron a las 8 de la mañana y que teníamos que entregar a las 5 de la tarde. Nuestra habitación estaba cubierta de planes estratégicos al cabo del día.

The competition took place in the brand new building of the Sinead Business School. There we spent most of the weekend and met for the first time the organizers that did and amazing work and the rest of the team. It was great to be able to meet very smart and interesting people of all over the world.

La competición fue el sábado y el domingo en el Nuevo edificio de la Said Business School. Allí fue la recepción donde fue fascinante poder hablar con los otros equipos y conocer a gente muy interesante de todos lo rincones del mundo.

We got to Oxford on Friday, and we stayed in Worcester College, a beautiful place full of old buildings that breath the spirit of Oxford, quiet gardens and classic quads.

Llegamos a Oxford el viernes y nos alojamos en Worcester College. Un sitio precioso lleno de edificios antiguos que emanaban el espiritu de Oxford, jardines preciosos donde solo el piar de lo pájaros o alguna ardilla rompían la tranquilidad.

We did it!!!! We beat the best business schools in Europe with our strategy in the business case competition organized by European Clearance Case House last weekend in Oxford. We got the second prize and the special prize of the jury, just after INSEAD from France, leaving behind the most prestigious schools such as IMD, London School of Economics, IESE, ESADE, etc. The case was about Softline a South African software manufacturer that had to decide the future strategy under the pressure of growing competition and the restrictions of the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy establish by the government. The keys of our success were our strategy focused in using the BEE as growth opportunity, and our excellent team presentation.

Lo conseguimos!!! Hemos machacado a las mejores escuelas de negocios de Europa con nuestra estrategia innovadora. Todo paso el fin de semana pasado en la competición de casos de negocios organizada por European Clearance Case House en Oxford. Ganamos dos de los tres premios posibles, el segundo puesto tras INSEAD de Francia y el premio especial del jurado. Dejamos detrás a escuelas como IMD, London School of Economics, IESE, ESADE, etc. El caso giraba entorno a Softline, una empresa de software para empresas de Sudáfrica que tenia que decidir que tipo de estrategia debe elegir para hacer frente al continuo acecho de la competencia y de las restricciones impuestas por las políticas de potenciación económica para la mayoría negra. La clave de nuestro éxito fue centrar nuestra estrategia en utilizar la política del gobierno como una oportunidad de crecimiento, combinado con una presentación y puesta en escena perfecta.
